Students receive inspiration on science field trip

October 17, 2014 By Sharon Machrone

Booker and Jemison with studentsThirty-two Link 8th graders participated in a day of science at Students2Science (S2S) in East Hanover, NJ yesterday. This non-profit organization provides hand-on experiments under the guidance of real scientists in a simulated but authentic lab (with great equipment that schools generally don’t have!). The experience is intended to encourage students to pursue careers in the STEM fields and “to improve student aptitude in STEM subject matter.” This is Link’s second year sending students to this program. Student and staff feedback about the experience – this year and last – has been very positive.
.
While a trip to S2S is special for our students, yesterday offered a bonus. The day was chosen by Bayer Corporation for a special ceremony – for the company to present a check for $100,000 to S2S to help them continue to provide science education that supplements what students receive in their schools. Dr. Philip Blake, president of Bayer, encouraged students to consider careers in STEM – telling them that that Bayer is in hiring mode! Bayer brought in additional speakers: Senator Cory Booker and former astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison, both great proponents of STEM education. Both the Senator and Dr. Jemison were very inspirational, in their remarks and interactions with our Linkers. Senator Booker expressed concern that there aren’t enough students going in to the STEM fields, so there will be a shortfall of employees to fill the ever increasing number of jobs in those areas. He, like Dr. Blake, encouraged students to take this career route for the opportunities they will have. Dr. Jamieson, in relating her own story, left the students understanding that they need to believe in themselves, and they will fulfill their dreams.

After the ceremony, students accompanied by Dr. Jamison and Senator Booker, returned to the lab to complete more experiments, completing a busy but productive day of learning and inspiration.

Here are some media links recounting the day’s event:

Congratulations to Link’s student leaders

October 8, 2014 By Sharon Machrone

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Link student body elected their leadership – the Student Government Association officers and Community Representatives – last month. The SGA currently meets as an elective, during which their advisor, Ms. Tanisha Wilson, is providing guidance on leadership, planning, organizing and communications. After the first quarter, the group will meet after school most Wednesdays. The leaders are in the midst of planning special student activities and community service projects for the year. The first activity will be a Halloween dance for the Upper House (7th and 8th graders) and a Halloween party for the Lower House (5th graders).

The election for Student Government Officers at Link was a great opportunity for students to learn about the election process. Students learned about voter registration, and those who wished to vote completed Voter Registration Forms. They received a Voter Registration card that they presented at election time. Students self-nominated for SGA offices, securing the endorsement of their fellow students and staff, and then campaigned the week before the election. This included presenting a speech before the student body. Students voted by paper ballot. A great learning experience for students: democracy in action!

LCCS board tours school building

October 8, 2014 By Sharon Machrone

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAt last month’s board meeting, Head of School Maria Pilar Paradiso conducted a tour for the school board trustees, so they could experience the wonderful warm and stimulating learning environment that staff created for our students for the start of the new year. Link’s maintenance crew, under the direction of Chief Operating Officer Leslie Baynes, worked very diligently though the summer to ensure that new space for the 5th grade was ready – cleaned, painted and furnished – as well to prepare the rest of the building for the arrival of students in September. Before school opened, teachers spent hours decorating and setting up their classrooms and the hallways to be welcoming and comfortable places for our students…an environment conducive to learning.

Link’s High School Night Slated for October 1st

September 28, 2014 By Sharon Machrone

Representatives from over 40 high schools – private day and boarding schools, Catholic schools, magnet schools and charter schools – will be in attendance at Link’s High School Night on Wednesday, October, 1,2014 at 6 pm. Link students and their families can learn about the great programs and opportunities that these schools offer. Since 8th graders will be begin the process of applying to high schools shortly, this is a terrific time to meet with a number of schools at one time, in one place. All 8th graders are expected to attend with at least one parent or guardian. Questions about the evening should be directed to Mr. Silver, director of high school placement at 973.642.0529 or gsilver@linkschool.org.
