Shavar Jeffries visited Link today and encouraged students to set high expectations for themselves, to prepare well and follow through on those expectations, and to keep track of their character as they move through life. Additionally he exhorted students to “give back” to their communities.
Starting with the moving story of his youth in Newark’s South Ward, Mr. Jeffries told of his rise to a successful career. He attributes his success to the loving and nurturing people in his life – his grandmother who raised him, the Boys and Girls Club that nurtured him, and the staff at Seton Hall Prep that encouraged him. Currently Mr. Jeffries is an associate professor of law, lawyer (civil rights) and elected member of the Newark Advisory Schools Board. Along the way, with the help of scholarships and through focus and hard work, Mr. Jeffries received a B.A from Duke University and J.D. from Columbia Law School.
Mr. Jeffries told students that everyone deserves a great education and that they are fortunate to be at Link where expectations are high and people are caring. He stated that “there is greatness inside you…greatness with the power to change the world.” But “you must rise to high expectations …there are no short cuts…you must work hard.”
