Five-time Grammy award winner Christian McBride visited a 5th grade music class at Link Community Charter School today. Along with a lesson in rhythm, which he likened to punctuation marks in spoken word, Mr. McBride and Allison Russo (flutist) from Jazz House Kids, performed the jazz classic Tangerine. In turn, students played Hot Cross Buns, which they have been learning in class, and McBride and Russo joined in. The students’ music teacher, Ms. Santiago added percussion, playing the drums.
Mr. McBride, along with his wife Melissa Walker, have been associated with the school for over 8 years, providing the school’s music program through their non-profit music education organization, Jazz House Kids. Julliard trained, Mr. McBride has performed and recorded with many other prominent jazz, musicians and ensembles, as well as with those in pop, hip-hop and soul. He has worked with Diana Krall, Pat Methany, Wynton Marsalis. among others.
Students were so excited to have this opportunity to meet a professional musician. They asked him a number of questions about his career and his music. We hope he will return to meet with students in other grades.
