Glassroots, a Newark based non-profit “dedicated to youth and a vision for new urban life energized by the arts,” has been partnering with Link, providing an elective in glass mosaic art for our students. During elective classes, artists work with students, teaching them the basics of glass art as they work on the large mosaics to be displayed in the school. Students design the pieces to reflect something about the school, learn to cut the glass pieces, mount them into the design they created and then grout the entire work. It takes eight hour-long sessions or more to complete one piece of art. This elective gives students a chance to express themselves artistically, learn a new form of art that they may have not encountered before and feel pride in producing art for the school building.
