In June, Link’s 7th grade students participated in the i2 STEM Immersion Program, one week of intensive project-based curriculum in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Students were assigned to one of two courses – robotics or digital game design. As the students learned to build a working robot or design a fun video game, they also learned critical life skills such perseverance through challenges and collaboration with peers. The culmination of the week’s activities was an “exhibition” where students shared their results with fellow Linkers, parents and staff. The program was made possible through Link’s partnership with i2 Learning and Schools That Can as well as funding from Link Education Partners and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Special thanks to these partners and the 7th grade teachers for expanding our students’ learning beyond the traditional classroom and broadening their horizons and career pathways in STEM fields. We’re hoping to have the funds to expand this program to the 8th grade next year.
Here are some quotes about the program from our students:
“The best thing about this course was that I had people help me and encourage me to keep going even if I felt like giving up.” -7th grade Digital Game Design student
“My advice for someone else taking this course: don’t give up – just keeping going no matter what, follow directions and read the scripts carefully, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.” – 7th grade Digital Game Design student
“Robotics is all about concentration and patience. Once you’ve mastered these qualities, the process becomes much easier.” -7th grade Robotics student
“The best thing about the course was the freedom we had to build our robots.” -7th grade Robotics student
“Yes, I would like to work in robotics some day. It’s pretty cool building and making things that can better the world in many ways.” -7th grade Robotics student
