Part of Link’s mission is to instill in students the importance of “giving back” to others, and this fall students have been doing a great job at it through a community clean-up/recycling project with the City of Newark and observation of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
6th grade students spent a morning with the City of Newark in a special project called “Slam Dunk the Junk,” a citywide clean-up effort in conjunction with New Jersey Clean Communities Council. Students donned protective gloves to rake and clean up Lincoln Park just a block away from the school, while learning about the importance of proper disposal of trash and recycling materials, and to take pride in their neighborhoods. Also in October, students and staff observed National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On “Link in Pink” Day, students donated $650 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The money collected will go toward breast cancer research and patient support. Most of the school dressed in pink in remembrance of cancer victims and in honor of cancer survivors. During the week they learned about the campaign for the cure and wanted reach out to help.
