Mrs. Sahirah Johnson, Link’s performing arts teacher received the Premier Theatre’s 2015 Bauer-Boucher Award which recognizes gifted Kean University students and alumni playwrights. Mrs. Johnson won the Bauer-Boucher Award for her play, Letting Go, the story of a family struggling to cope with the tragic loss of their 16 year old daughter and sister, Mia. After death, Mia must find a way to convince her mother to repair her relationship with her incarcerated son and open her heart to love. The play was read professionally at Premier Theatre this past January.
Mrs. Johnson has taught at Link for over 7 years, having come to the school through Playwrights of New Jersey. Each year while at Link she has produced a spring musical and for most of those years, the Black History Month program. At Link her playwriting skills are very apparent; she often writes the student plays herself or adapts those of others to fit Link’s needs. Mrs. Johnson is an Equity actor, who has appeared in numerous plays including Rent (National Tour), Doubt, Seussical and more as well as being a professional vocalist and voice over artist.
Mrs. Johnson motto: “I live what I teach.” And certainly, she does!
