Five Link students, accompanied by Link teacher Dan Whalen, participated in Schools That Can’s 2nd annual Design Day Challenge this fall, along with middle school students from other Newark charter, district, and independent schools. The purpose of the event was to provide students with a challenge that encouraged teamwork while solving a real life challenge hands-on.
During the event, our students were placed in groups with students from other schools and were challenged by a real life client, the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation (Newark CEDC). The challenge was to create a mobile app to be used in kiosks around the city to get information to and from people. The designs had to be user friendly, have interactive and educational elements, and meet the needs of the city’s residents, including children. A panel of local educators, architects, developers, entrepreneurs, and business executives then judged the results and handed out awards in the Best Overall, Best Design, Best Presentation and People’s Choice categories.
Of the event, one Link student stated,” …it was fun being able to collaborate with students from other schools.” Another said , “…[The program} showed that hard works pays off.”
