Link Community Charter School was proud to be selected as an “art gallery,” to exhibit student and alumni work, in this year’s prestigious Newark Open Doors Arts Festival. Link’s doors were “opened” on Saturday, October 14th and Thursday, October 19th for our families, friends, and the general public to view the show, “Inspiration from the Masters.” The exhibit at Link featured art works inspired by master artists, such as Vincent van Gogh, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, and Andy Warhol as well as the students’ original art, photography, and glass mosaic murals.
Since 1969, Link has nurtured the talents of thousands of youth who have contributed to the arts locally and nationally. The exhibit celebrates this legacy with art work created by Link students and recent alumni under the guidance of Link’s art teachers and several local artists-in-residence. Link’s Arts Program is funded in part by Link Education Partners and the James E. and Diane W. Burke Foundation.
In the summer of 2017, Link applied to the Newark Arts Council, sponsor of the citywide arts event, and was excited to be one of two schools in Newark to be selected. Jeremy V. Johnson, Executive Director, Newark Arts Council visited Link’s exhibit, and commented, in an article on Tap Into Newark, an online newsletter, “It’s really important that we support and nurture the next generation of arts lovers. Newark Arts is extremely proud of the youth participants in the Open Doors Citywide Arts Festival. I was particularly moved by the students at Link Community Charter School who created artwork inspired by such giants as Jackson Pollack, Jacob Lawrence, and Faith Ringgold. It was awesome.”
Open Doors Citywide Arts Festival is New Jersey’s largest multi-day celebration of the visual and performing arts, occurring over four days in the great city of Newark. Now in its 16th year, the festival draws thousands of visitors, as more than 100 venues join forces to showcase visual, performing, and literary art. Link looks forward to participating again next year.
