Fall Festival Fun at Penn

October 22, 2025 By Sharon Machrone

Link’s K-4 scholars had a fantastic time at the annual Fall Festival, thanks to our partners from the Greater Newark Conservancy, Food Corps NJ, and Link staff. This was a fun educational experience, with our students visiting several stations in the Garden Classroom. They learned about urban animals, the life cycle of pumpkins, tasted different apple varieties, made all themed bookmarks, and even participated in a scavenger hunt, all under the bright sun. We were excited to host preschoolers from @urbanleagueec Early Childhood Center, who enthusiastically joined in the activities…and some gym recess time…with Linkers.

Linkers attend mentoring program at Novartis

October 16, 2025 By Sharon Machrone

Fourteen LCCS 8th grade scholars were chosen to participate in Novartis' Teen Corporate Mentoring Program recently, an annual event that gives middle and high school students - over 150 students from 30 schools - exposure to the pharmaceutical industry through speakers, workshops, and collaborative projects. Participants heard from Junior Achievement, which emphasized the importance of budgeting for unexpected healthcare costs. Lt. Governor Tahesha Way offered inspiring words, and NFL Alumni Tiki Barber, Nate Burleson, and Rob Robertson discussed Mental Health Awareness and offered support. Prior to the two-day event, Novartis divided the scholars into small groups and then instructed them to connect remotely and then , at the event, in person, to research and develop presentations focusing on Financial Literacy and Healthcare Access. The 17 groups presented their findings on the evening of the second day, a number receiving awards. There was a celebratory dinner to which parents of the participating students were invited. Our scholars were amazing!

Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff Event at Halsey

October 3, 2025 By Sharon Machrone

On Thursday, October 18, our Grade 5-8 Halsey Campus proudly kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with two dynamic speakers who inspired and empowered our school community. Newark’s Deputy Mayor of Community Engagement, Jacqueline Mercado-Quiles, and Public Service Leader Stephanie Pabon’s messages highlighted the importance of community, giving back to others, valuing education, and recognizing the power within each scholar to be a changemaker.

At the end of this powerful program, we were thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity: Link has been invited to participate in a special event at Newark Symphony Hall on October 10! To select the scholars who will represent us, students in grades 5–8 are invited to participate in an essay writing competition. Scholars may choose from five thought-provoking topics, and our Hispanic Heritage Committee will select eight winners to attend this celebration.

Learning about Peruvian dance at Penn

October 2, 2025 By Sharon Machrone

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, scholars at Penn enjoyed watching La Marinera Norteňa, a traditional Peruvian partner dance that reenacts a courtship and is often performed with handkerchiefs and filled with playful, romantic movements. Two talented performers, Prescila (15) and Matthew (13), who have been dancing for 8 years and who compete in worldwide competitions, shared this beautiful and graceful dance with our students.

Welcome to the new school year!

September 3, 2025 By Sharon Machrone

Linkers are back to school! First day excitement! First day jitters for some! A really great start to the new school year at our Penn and Halsey Campuses. So excited that Link is now a full K – 8 school, with the addition of 4th grade. And rolling out the theme for the year – “One Link, One Mission, Infinite Possibilities!” It will be a great year!

Taking time to build the Link Team!

August 26, 2025 By Sharon Machrone

Building on a decades-long tradition, Link teachers and staff engaged in the annual retreat with longtime partner, Project U.S.E., to prepare themselves for the important work ahead. Through activities and conversations, they built personal connections, focused on mission delivery, and challenged themselves to work collaboratively through obstacles and challenges, all the while focusing on driving positive student outcomes and building an environment that supports success. Special thanks to Project U.S.E. and San Alfonso Retreat House!
