Observing World Water Day

April 15, 2022 By Sharon Machrone

In observation of World Water Day on March 22, students and staff made a generous donation to Water for Sudan, a non-profit organization which provides access to clean water in desolate communities in that country.  The fundraiser, a Blue Dress Down Day,  was run by the 7th grade who were inspired by a novel that completed in class – A Long Walk, by Linda Sue Park.

Various activities happened in classes during the day, including a “water race” for 7th graders. Click here for the Upper House News Team’s account of the 7th grade World Water Day experience. It was written by David O. (lead writer), Nicole D., Darley P,, Kiara S., and Felipe s.  David and Kiara took the photos.

Among the other water -related activities: 5th graders learned the best way to filter dirty water in science lab and several 7th grade students read the book Nya’s Long Walk Linda Sue Park to kindergartners!

Math is fun at Link’s Family Math Night!

April 1, 2022 By Sharon Machrone

Over 60 families enjoyed this year’s Family Math Night, which was full of student-created stations and run by our scholars. The wall of the gym was plastered with posters of math problems written by our scholars and the stations were full of creativity and run by our energetic 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade scholars. Stations included opportunities for families to compete in Family Feud style, play a spirited math bingo game, try to be the speediest at math facts, and so much more!

No One Eats Alone Day!

April 1, 2022 By Sharon Machrone

5th graders gathered together for lunch in the cafeteria for NO ONE EATS ALONE DAY, a national event which encourages inclusiveness and kindness. Students were seated (with Plexiglas between them, for Covid safety reasons) with others whom they normally don’t have the chance  hang out with at school. Ice breakers and games helped them to get to know one another better. Judging by the happy sounds in the cafeteria, students enjoyed this time of socialization.

Free vaccine clinic at Link

March 15, 2022 By Sharon Machrone

Link is partnering with the City of Newark, Department of Health and Community Wellness, to hold a free COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Friday, March 25, from 1:30 – 5 pm at the school. Link families have received pre-registration forms (via child’s backpack and email) and are asked to have their children return them to the school prior to the 25th. Community members are also welcome to come to the school, at 23 Pennsylvania Avenue to receive the vaccine.

All families must complete the Vaccination Screening Consent Form and return it to the school. All scholars ages 5 to 11 must have parental supervision. Scholars ages 12-17 do not need parental supervision, but the back of the consent form must be signed. Once completed, please return the form to the Main Office. This will serve as your registration. You can send the form with your child when s/he comes to school tomorrow morning or email a scan of the form to us at link@linkschool.org. Here are the forms:

Vaccine Screening Consent Form Pfizer
ParentalConsent Proxy Authorization Form
Please note: The Parental Consent Proxy Authorization form is only needed if the parent or guardian cannot accompany scholars ages 5 to 11 and another adult 21 years or old will be present. School staff members cannot be listed as proxies, and the person serving as proxy needs to bring identificatio

For information about the vaccine, please visit the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-10 Vaccine EUA Fact Sheet (fda.gov) website.

Project Lit meets Young Adult Novelist Jessica Kim

March 6, 2022 By Sharon Machrone

PROJECT LIT MEETS YOUNG ADULT NOVELIST ONLINE

Students in Link’s Project Lit Book Club meet Jessica Kim, author of Stand Up, Yumi Chung, a novel about a young Asian American girl trying to find her way in life, that the book club has been reading this month. Ms. Kim, an elementary school teacher turned author, shared her journey as a writer, including how she started, the importance of finding a “writing community” for feedback and encouragement, and her successes and failures. Students really enjoyed the book and asked Mrs. Kim many questions about it. Thank you Mrs. Kim for sharing so wonderfully with our young scholars!

Katrina Adams inspires Link’s young ladies

March 1, 2022 By Sharon Machrone

Seventh Grade Scholars in the Girl’s Mentoring Program visited virtually with Katrina Adams this past Friday. Ms. Adams is a professional tennis player, former CEO and President of the United States Tennis Association, and author of the book, Own the Arena. She was the first black woman, and youngest person ever, to hold the top leadership position at the USTA.  The girls enjoyed learning about the importance of setting goals, expressing gratitude to those who mentor us, and how to embody a confident attitude to own “arenas” in our lives. Thank you, Ms. Adams, for sharing your wisdom and insight with Link scholars!
