Toyota takes us out to the ballgame!

June 29, 2018 By Sharon Machrone

A great way to end the school year – a trip to the Bronx to see that Yankees play! New York Region Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. treated 125 students and staff to a great day the ballpark, including lunch and snacks. One teacher chaperoning the trip stated, “…the kids were happy and had fun, and it was a joy to watch them enjoying themselves. The experience of being there with each other on such a beautiful day, having a little bit of freedom and excitement, seemed just the perfect way to end the school year. Thank you to Toyota!” P.S. And the Yankees won!

Linkers benefit from celebrity mentoring at golf event

June 29, 2018 By Sharon Machrone

The Newark Mentoring Movement invited Link students, who receive weekly mentoring by attorneys from the NJ Attorney General’s Office, to their annual golf event at Bayonne Golf Club on Monday, June 18. The students participated in small group round table mentoring discussions with NJ Senator Cory Booker, former NY Giant Justin Tuck and his wife Lauren, owner of Jersey Cider Works Charles Rosen and owner and operator ShopRite Newark Neil Greenstein. Students asked questions, generating discussions with the mentors on achieving one’s personal best, helpful habits for success, and more. Then they hit the links for a golf clinic with the golf pros and enjoyed lunch. Link students have greatly benefited from a five year partnership with Newark Mentoring Movement and the NJ Attorney General’s Office, and the mentoring visit to the golf club was a very special mentoring opportunity for our Linkers.

Gifts of books and time help students curb summer learning loss

June 29, 2018 By Sharon Machrone

Link is grateful to many for supporting the schools’ Summer Reading Challenge, a program designed to help combat summer learning loss to which students are prone. Bridge of Books Foundation and Mandelbaum Salsburg PC provided over 600 books for our Link scholars’ personal home libraries. Alumni, parents and volunteers spent time on a June Saturday at Link sorting the books and categorizing them by reading level, so that each child received books that he or she would find challenging, but readable. At the annual Summer Book Giveaway, each student received several books to take home to read over the summer, in addition to one required novel. Thanks to all for their support of our students’ learning!

Link’s Class of ’18 earns record $4.6m for high school

June 25, 2018 By Sharon Machrone

Link Community Charter School is proud to announce that the graduates in the Class of 2018 have been awarded over $4.6 million in scholarships and financial aid for high school. This amount exceeds the school’s record of $4.3 million set by last year’s graduates. These financial resources provide access to prestigious and competitive independent boarding and day schools that Link scholars would not otherwise have. The schools that offered scholarships and aid include St. Mark’s School, The Master’s School, George School, Governor’s Academy, Concord Academy, The Dublin School, Peddie School, and others. In addition, students were accepted into and received scholarship and financial aid from private day schools in NJ, including Newark Academy, St. Peter’s Prep, The Hudson School, Seton Hall Prep, St. Vincent Academy, St. Benedict’s Prep, Marist, Immaculate Conception, and more.

Link’s Head of School Maria Pilar Paradiso states, “We are proud of the 71 graduates of the Class of 2018. They are our school’s first class to graduates with a full four years at Link, and their success is evident in the record amount they have earned for high school. Independent boarding and day schools, as well as scholarship programs, clearly recognize the quality of a Link student to have conferred such generous scholarships and financial aid, and we are grateful to them on behalf of our graduates. We are excited that, with the resources granted to our graduates, they will continue to succeed academically, to building upon the excellent education they received at Link.”
