Visit from a local bookseller and author

February 12, 2026 By Sharon Machrone

Ms. Barnwell, owner of Source of Knowledge Bookstore, and local author Craig Bradley visited Link and read to the 7th Grade Team Paz and 6th grade Teams Imani and Kuumba as part of our Black History Month activities. During the visit, students were highly engaged and actively participated in discussions. They asked thoughtful questions, listened respectfully, and demonstrated Link Community’s Core Values—Doing One’s Best, Respect, Responsibility, and Caring. The hour of reading was meaningful. It provided scholars with the opportunity to connect with Black literature, support a local Black-owned business, and celebrate Black history through storytelling and community partnership.

Source of Knowledge is a Black-owned business that focuses on providing literature created by Black authors across many genres, including a wide selection of children’s books, and is located at 867 Broad Street, Newark, NJ, right behind Halsey Campus.

A new experience for Linkers!

February 7, 2026 By Sharon Machrone

Link scholars enjoyed the snow-capped trails in Northern NJ on snowshoes with our long-time partners Project U.S.E. New experiences, such as this one,  help Linkers develop important habits of mind that help them achieve and prepare for a lifetime of learning and growth.

World Read Aloud Day thrills our young scholars

February 4, 2026 By Sharon Machrone

Our Kindergarten – Grade 4 scholars truly enjoyed listening to stories read by volunteers, parents, and staff on World Read Aloud Day, February 4th. Link observes this day annually, to celebrate the power of reading aloud — building literacy skills, sparking imagination, and fostering a love of books in our students.

A huge thank-you to those who took the time to read to our scholars, making the day special and meaningful. Events such as this one have a lasting impact, helping students see reading as fun, engaging, and something our entire community values.

Maria Pilar Paradiso honored by Project U.S.E.

January 22, 2026 By Sharon Machrone

Link’s Head of School Maria Pilar Paradiso was honored today by Project U.S.E. with the prestigious Costello Commitment Award. Anthony Capone, Bob Goger, Mike Bagley, and Amy Follett from Project U.S.E. visited Link’s Halsey Campus during Morning Circle with students and staff to present the award to Maria, recognizing her as a “passionate supporter and champion of experiential education… [who] has worked tirelessly to keep students connected to their communities and natural environments.”
Link has maintained a long-standing partnership with Project U.S.E., a non-profit organization dedicated to providing experiential education to youth and adults. Through this collaboration, Link scholars and staff have participated in outdoor adventure education programs featuring hiking, canoeing, challenge courses, and camping—experiences that foster confidence, teamwork, leadership, and personal growth.

Winter Holidays Around the World Celebration

December 19, 2025 By Sharon Machrone

Students at our Pennsylvania Avenue Campus performed to a full house of families during their 2nd Annual Winter Holidays Around the World Celebration before Winter Break. Each grade, kindergarten through grade 4, researched a specific holiday and its customs, and then proudly presented their findings in their classrooms to visiting families.
Afterward, students and guests gathered in the gym for a lively assembly featuring songs and dances connected to the holidays they studied. It was a joyful and meaningful way for our scholars to explore and celebrate cultures from around the world.  (Kindergarten – Chinese New Year, the year of the Horse; Grade 1 – Happy New Year; Grade 2 – Diwali, the Festival of Lights; Grade 3 – Christmas; and Grade 4 – Kwanzaa)

Celebrating reading!

December 17, 2025 By Sharon Machrone

Our enthusiastic 2nd graders from Team Chavez proudly shared their nonfiction texts from the “From the Heart” writing unit with their eager “kindergarten buddies” from Team Veritas. This meaningful writing unit challenges children to become published authors on topics where they shine as experts. The young scholars poured their knowledge and passion into their books, crafting stories about bunnies (so many bunny experts in this class!), the exciting journey of learning Japanese through Duolingo, and a fascinating exploration of Nigeria. After their readings, each 2nd grader sparked thoughtful conversation with their younger buddies by asking, “What did you learn from my book?” The kindergarteners listened with wide eyes and eager questions, making this cross-grade partnership a beautiful celebration of student voice and expertise.
