Julia Bauer, a member of Girl Scout Troop 903 in Mahwah, presented over 450 books to Link Community School’s library, as part of her Girl Scout Gold Project. Julia’s project focused on the use of social media to encourage younger students to read more and to develop a love of reading. Julia held a “Social Reading Book Fair” at the Mahwah Public Library to introduce children to online reading communities and to explain how these communities can supplement and enhance the reading experience. Having participated in online reading communities since she was in fourth grade, Julia states that she was encouraged to read more, and she has benefited much from other readers’ perspectives and ideas on books she has read and enjoyed. At the book fair, Julia collected new and gently used books appropriate for middle school students. Through a family friend, she found Link Community School – and our new library – and donated a wonderful selection of books. When Julia brought the books to Link, she shared her experiences with online reading communities and her passion for reading with our students during a Closing Circle. Link congratulates Julia on the completion of her Gold Award project and appreciates being the recipient of so many great books!
