The Link student body elected their leadership – the Student Government Association officers and Community Representatives – last month. The SGA currently meets as an elective, during which their advisor, Ms. Tanisha Wilson, is providing guidance on leadership, planning, organizing and communications. After the first quarter, the group will meet after school most Wednesdays. The leaders are in the midst of planning special student activities and community service projects for the year. The first activity will be a Halloween dance for the Upper House (7th and 8th graders) and a Halloween party for the Lower House (5th graders).
The election for Student Government Officers at Link was a great opportunity for students to learn about the election process. Students learned about voter registration, and those who wished to vote completed Voter Registration Forms. They received a Voter Registration card that they presented at election time. Students self-nominated for SGA offices, securing the endorsement of their fellow students and staff, and then campaigned the week before the election. This included presenting a speech before the student body. Students voted by paper ballot. A great learning experience for students: democracy in action!
