Our 7th and 8th grade math classes had fun celebrating National Pi Day on March 14th. Pi Day is an annual event commemorating the mathematical constant π , known as pi, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Working in groups (7th and 8th graders mixed), students explored the concept of pi, measuring the circumference and diameter of real pies. Students found that the string they used to measure the circumference could be cut into a little more than three pieces equal to the diameter… consistent with the decimal representation of pi: 3.14159. Of course, after the activity, the students ate the pie! A delicious way to learn and reinforce this important math concept! And a wonderful collaboration between the 7th and 8th grade students and their teachers, Mrs. Moody and Ms. Wilson!
