Linkers attended a “book fair” in our school library this week, to select books to read during their Winter Break. They chose from over 700 books that were generously donated by Bridge of Books, a non-profit with the mission “to provide an ongoing source of books to underserved children throughout NJ in order to support the development of literacy skills and to encourage a love of reading.” This is the second donation this organization has made to Link, and the donation and its purpose dovetails perfectly with Link’s literacy efforts. Studies have found that students who select the books they read will read more often than who are assigned books.
During the winter break, students are required to log their reading times and complete comprehension activities. It is expected they will read the books they choose at the fair to do this. The books have been arranged by reading level, so the students can pick books of interest that they are able to read and absorb. Requiring reading over the break will help students maintain their literacy skills despite the break in the school schedule.
Link is grateful to Bridges of Books for their support of Link and its students!
